Man Pleads Guilty to Grand Theft for Stealing $200,000 from Vehicle Loan Agreements

SANTA ANA, Calif. –A man was convicted and sentenced to a court offer of 270 days in county jail, 6 years formal probation and ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $200,000 plus interest to the victim for stealing $200,000 that the victim loaned him for purchasing and re-selling used vehicles.  Mohammed Shaid Abdul Latif Moulvi, 50, citizen of India and resident of Canada, pleaded guilty to 10 felony counts of Grand Theft.

Between May 9, 2012 and June 15, 2012, Moulvi entered into 10 separate Vehicle Loan Agreements with the victim totaling $200,000.  Prior to this theft, Moulvi and the victim would enter into loan agreements, Moulvi would buy and sell vehicles for a profit and the victim would be repaid on his loan plus fees.  After June 2012, Moulvi absconded and never paid the victim back.

On November 20, 2014, a warrant of arrest was issued by the Superior Court.  The defendant was located living in Canada and was extradited back to Orange County in April of 2019.

Prior to sentencing, the victim made a victim impact statement to the court, expressing that his main concern was getting back his monetary loss and how it had effected his family and savings.

As of May 24, 2019, Moulvi has served 168 days in county jail.  His expected release date is on or about July 12, 2019.

Detectives from the Santa Ana Police Department investigated this case.

Deputy District Attorney Tina Patel of the Major Fraud Unit prosecuted this case.

UPDATE:

Due to credit calculations from his time in Canada, his release date has been advanced and is currently pending.
