EMPLOYER CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTED SEXUAL ASSAULT OF LIVE-IN HOUSEKEEPER BY DRUGGING ICE CREAM WITH SLEEPING PILLS

*Also charged with drugging and raping a second woman in 2001

SANTA ANA – A man has been arrested and charged with attempting to sexually assault his live-in housekeeper by putting sleeping pills in a bowl of ice cream and raping another woman in 2001 in a similar manner.  James Scott Campbell, 66, Santa Ana, was arrested and charged yesterday with felonies for attempted rape by use of drugs, rape by use of drugs, two counts of administering drugs, and possession of a firearm by a felon. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 12 years and eight months in state prison. The People will be requesting $100,000 bail and Campbell is scheduled to be arraigned today, Friday, Oct. 10, 2008, at 1:30 p.m. in Department C-55, Central Justice Center, Santa Ana.

Jane Doe #1

Shortly after 9:00 p.m. on July 15, 2008, 48-year-old Jane Doe #1, a live-in housekeeper for Campbell, went to her bedroom. Campbell is accused of knocking on her bedroom door and offering the victim a bowl of coffee flavored ice cream.  He is accused of having mixed Temazepam, a type of sleeping pill, into the ice cream with the intention of drugging the victim in order to sexually assault her. After Campbell left the room, Jane Doe #1 began to feel dizzy and disoriented. The victim became concerned because Campbell had made sexual comments to her in the past. Jane Doe #1 left the house and went to the hospital, where she was given a drug test that came back positive for Temazepam. The ice cream also tested positive for the same drug. The case was reported to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department (OCSD), who found additional sleeping pills and several firearms in Campbell’s home.  Campbell has a 1990 prior felony conviction for grand theft.

Jane Doe #2

The July 2008 case prompted a review of a 2001 complaint against Campbell, which had previously not been filed due to insufficient evidence at the time. Jane Doe #1 and Jane Doe #2 do not know each other. On March 3, 2001, Campbell is accused of going to the home of Jane Doe #2, with whom he had a prior relationship. He is accused of drugging Jane Doe #2 with benzodiazepines, another type of sleeping pill, and raping the victim while she was unconscious. Jane Doe #2 woke up to find Campbell sexually assaulting her.  The following day Jane Doe #2 tested positive for the drug at the hospital.
