FORMER HIGH SCHOOL CAMPUS SECURITY OFFICER TO BE ARRAIGNED FOR UNLAWFUL SEXUAL RELATIONSHIP WITH 16-YEAR-OLD FEMALE STUDENT

NEWPORT BEACH – A former high school campus security officer will be arraigned tomorrow for having an unlawful sexual relationship with a 16-year-old female student. Juan Armando Candela, 26, Tustin, is charged with two felony counts of unlawful sexual intercourse and oral copulation of a minor. Candela faces a maximum of three years and eight months in state prison if convicted. He is out of custody on $50,000 bail and is expected to be arraigned tomorrow, Sept. 18, 2009, at 8:30 a.m. in Department H-2, Harbor Justice Center, Newport Beach.

Candela who was then a campus security officer at Beckman High School located on Bryan Avenue in Irvine, met a 16-year-old female student through his employment at the school. Between February 2009 and March 2009, Candela is accused of having an unlawful sexual relationship with Jane Doe including engaging in sexual intercourse and oral copulation on multiple occasions in the defendant’s car and at the victim’s residence. None of the sexual contacts occurred at the school. Jane Doe is no longer a student at the high school.

On the early morning of Aug. 20, 2009, Candela is accused of sitting with the victim in his parked car and being contacted by the Newport Beach Police Department. The Irvine Police Department investigated this case.
