GALAXY STREET TEAM TO JOIN OCDA’S 8th ANNUAL
SPRING BREAK SOCCER CAMP TO ENCOURAGE HEALTHY AND POSITIVE CHOICES FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

SANTA ANA – The Galaxy Street Team of the LA Galaxy soccer team will join the Orange County District Attorney’s Office (OCDA) 8th Annual Spring Youth Soccer Camp (SYSC) next week for elementary school students. OCDA’s SYSC is an ongoing gang prevention effort to build self-esteem and encourage healthy and positive choices. The 3-day spring break soccer clinic begins on Monday, April 11, 2011, at 8:00 a.m., and concludes Wednesday, April 13, 2011. The program will be held at Carl E. Gilbert Elementary School, located at 7255 8th Street in Buena Park, and will include students from James A. Whitaker and Carl E. Gilbert Elementary schools. Media are invited to attend all portions of the camp.

During the camp, approximately 50 students between 10 and 11 years old will spend the mornings learning soccer techniques from volunteer coaches to improve their soccer skills, health, and self-esteem. Students will then participate in afternoon educational workshops where they will have an opportunity to learn about law enforcement and positive decision-making from police officers, a deputy district attorney and district attorney investigator, educators, a probation officer, military personnel and professionals from other participating law enforcement agencies.

Workshop presenters include Buena Park Police Department’s Sergeant Frank Nunes, Detective Sergio Lepe, Officer John Bailey and Investigator Robert Mann of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department Bomb Squad. District Attorney Tony Rackauckas and a representative from the Buena Park Police Department will distribute Certificates of Achievement to the children on the last day of the spring camp.

The LA Galaxy Street Team (GST) will attend the camp to interact with the kids during lunch on Monday and Tuesday. The GST brings the thrill and experience of an LA Galaxy game to community groups. GST’s mobile soccer experience puts students in the middle of the action, whether it be interactive, giveaways, Galaxy trivia, or the Galaxy skills team. Lunch will be provided at noon for the kids by Larry’s Pizza in Fullerton, and Subway located at 7814 W. Orangethorpe in Buena Park.

The OCDA Government and Community Relations Unit has organized this event in collaboration with the Buena Park Gang Reduction and Intervention Partnership (GRIP) committee. GRIP aims to decrease gang activity through increased participation in schools and positive extracurricular programs. This SYSC is sponsored by the Orange County Youth Sports Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping instill a sense of hope, opportunity and accomplishment in our community’s youth.
