HOSPITAL PATIENT CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTED MURDER OF 91-YEAR-OLD PATIENT-ROOMMATE

WESTMINSTER – A hospital patient was charged today for the attempted murder of his 91-year-old patient-roommate. Ibrahim Yousef Battat, 36, Laguna Niguel, is charged with one felony count of attempted murder, one felony count of elder abuse, and sentencing enhancements for premeditation and deliberation and great bodily injury to an elder. If convicted, Battat faces a maximum sentence of 10 years to life in state prison. He is being held on $1 million bail. The scheduled arraignment was continued in court today to June 27, 2014, Department W-2, West Justice Center, Westminster.

At the time of the crime Battat and the victim were patients and roommates at Fountain Valley Regional Medical Center (FVRMC). At approximately 3:40 a.m. on June 4, 2014, Battat is accused of attacking 91-year-old John Doe by using his hands to cover the victim’s nose and mouth. The defendant is accused of repeatedly punching John Doe and causing him to suffer a broken finger, major cuts to his head and hand, and eye swelling. Battat is accused of beating the victim until nurses and a patient in the next room arrived to restrain the defendant.

FVRMC staff restrained Battat until Fountain Valley Police Department (FVPD) arrived and arrested him. FVPD investigated this case.
