MAN ARRAIGNED FOR SHOOTING AT COSTA MESA OFFICER AND IMPERSONATING AN OFFICER WHILE COMMITTING BURGLARY
SANTA ANA, Calif. – A man was arraigned today for attempted murder by shooting at a Costa Mesa Police Department (CMPD) officer and impersonating an officer during a burglary. Korrell Santana Kybar Cole, 22, Huntington Beach, is charged with one felony count of attempted murder of a peace officer, one felony count of assault with a semiautomatic firearm on a peace officer, two felony counts of first degree residential burglary, one felony count of impersonating an officer, one felony count of grand theft, one felony count of unlawful taking of vehicle with sentencing enhancements for the personal discharge of a firearm, the personal use of a firearm, and crime-bail-crime. If convicted, Cole faces a maximum sentence of 35years to life in state prison. Cole is being held on $ 1 million bail and is scheduled for a pre-trial hearing on March 29, 2016, at 8:30 a.m. in Department W-12, West Justice Center, Westminster.
On Jan. 30, 2016, Cole is accused of driving on Harbor Boulevard in Costa Mesa when his car was struck by another vehicle. The defendant is accused of fleeing the scene on foot before CMPD officers arrived to the site of the collision. CMPD located the defendant in a nearby residential neighborhood, where an officer ordered the defendant to stop. The defendant is accused of shooting at the direction of the officer with a firearm and running to a nearby vacant residence. Cole is accused of entering the home and stealing a purse containing several items.
A short time later, the residents returned home and encountered the defendant. Cole is accused of identifying himself as a police officer to the residents and displaying his firearm to them. The victims, fearing for their safety, left their home and contacted CMPD.
Cole is accused of then entering a second vacant home and stealing additional items including several pieces of jewelry, a set of car keys, and a vehicle from the residence. He is accused of attempting to drive away in the vehicle when CMPD officers arrived at the scene. Cole is accused of refusing to exit the vehicle. CMPD arrested the defendant after a 45-minute standoff. CMPD investigated this case.
Cole is accused of committing the above charged offenses while out on bail for two other pending cases.

Cole is charged with two felony counts of using tear gas and using tear gas as a weapon, and one felony count of possession of tear gas and a tear gas weapon with a sentencing enhancement allegation for crime-bail-crime.
Between Feb. 27, 2015, and March 1, 2015, Cole is accused of possessing tear gas and using the weapon to spray transient victims in Costa Mesa. CMPD investigated this case. On March 21, 2015, Cole was released from custody on $50,000bail.

Cole is charged with four felony counts of first degree residential burglary, one felony count of second degree vehicle burglary, three felony counts of receiving stolen property, one felony count of evading while driving recklessly, one misdemeanor count of resisting and obstructing a peace officer, and two misdemeanor counts of carrying a loaded firearm in public. On Feb. 19, 2016, Cole was released from custody on $ 200,000 bail.
Deputy District Attorney Jess Rodriguez of the Special Prosecutions Unit is prosecuting these cases.
