MAN CHARGED WITH PUNCHING 24-YEAR-OLD BAR PATRON RENDERING HIM UNCONSCIOUS

SANTA ANA – A man was charged today and will be arraigned tomorrow for punching a 24-year-old bar patron, rendering the victim unconscious. Oscar Raul Medina-Perez, 24, Huntington Beach, is charged with one felony count of battery with serious injury. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of four years in state prison. The People will be requesting the defendant be held on $25,000 bail. The defendant is in custody on an Immigration and Customs Enforcement hold and will be ineligible to post bail. Medina-Perez is scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow, July 15, 2011, in Department CJ-1, Central Jail, Santa Ana. The time is to be determined.
On the night of July 5, 2011, Medina-Perez is accused of being at La Barca Night Club in Stanton. The victim, 24-year-old Leovardo Vera Bustos, was at the bar with his cousin. Medina-Perez is accused of engaging the victim in a verbal argument while standing in front of the night club, with a security guard standing between them. The defendant is accused of escalating the verbal argument and punching the victim once in the face. The victim immediately fell to the ground and lost consciousness.
Bustos was taken home and never regained consciousness. On the morning of July 6, 2011, the victim was found in bed unresponsive with blood coming from his nose. He was transported to University of California, Irvine Medical Center in Orange, where he is currently on life support.
Senior Deputy District Attorney Ebrahim Baytieh of the Homicide Unit is prosecuting this case.
