MAN INDICTED BY GRAND JURY FOR STABBING
TWO MEN IN MOVIE THEATER DURING HORROR FILM

SANTA ANA – An Anaheim man was indicted today on charges of stabbing two men during a horror movie at a theater in Fullerton. Steven Walter Robinson Jr., 24, Anaheim, was indicted by the grand jury for two felony counts of attempted murder with premeditation and deliberation, two felony counts of mayhem, and sentencing enhancements for the personal use of a deadly weapon and causing great bodily injury. If convicted, Robinson faces a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted. The defendant is being held on $1 million bail and will be arraigned on the indictment tomorrow, Friday, Aug. 1, 2008, at 8:00 a.m. in Department C-4, Central Justice Center, Santa Ana.

At approximately 6:30 p.m. on February 24, 2008, Robinson is accused of buying a ticket for the horror movie “The Signal” at the AMC Theatre at 1001 South Lemon in Fullerton. The defendant is accused of wearing dark clothing and sunglasses inside the theater. Robinson is accused of going into the theater before the movie started and walking out a few minutes later, demanding a refund, and leaving.

Robinson is accused of sneaking back into the theater. After the movie had started at approximately 7:20 p.m., a security guard noticed Robinson in the theater, which only had four people inside, and alerted a manager. Police were contacted and arrived shortly thereafter. While officers were in the lobby, Robinson is accused of getting up from his seat and approaching Julio Sanchez, 38, and stabbing the victim in the arm, chest, knee, and head. The victim was able to escape into the lobby covered in blood. Robinson is accused of then approaching Eloy Uresti, 65, cutting his arm with the knife, and hitting him on the head with a hammer. Uresti ran into the lobby seconds after Sanchez, and Robinson is accused of fleeing the scene through a rear theater door. The two victims did not know each other or the defendant.

After the attempted murder, Robinson is accused of fleeing to Las Vegas, NV, to hide in his brother’s apartment. He was arrested on March 7, 2008, on a $500,000 warrant and was brought back to Orange County.

Deputy District Attorney Andrew Katz of the Special Prosecutions Unit is prosecuting this case.
