MAN LINKED THROUGH DNA SENTENCED TO 52YEARS TO LIFE FOR THREATENING TO KILL AND SEXUALLY ASSAULTING TWO GIRLS THROUGH BEDROOM WINDOW AT SLEEPOVER
WESTMINSTER – An Oregon man linked through DNA was sentenced today to 52 years to life in state prison for sexually assaulting two girls through a bedroom window during a sleepover. Trevor Jordan Shaw, 40, Roseburg, OR, was found guilty by a jury on Jan. 21, 2009, of felonies for two counts of sexual penetration by foreign object, two counts of criminal threats, dissuading a witness by force, and first degree residential burglary. The jury found true the sentencing enhancement allegations for sexual crimes against multiple victims, sexual crimes during the commission of residential burglary, and non-accomplice present during a residential burglary.
At approximately 2:30 a.m. on March 29, 2001, 14-year-old Jane Doe #1 and 15-year-old Jane Doe #2 were having a sleepover at Jane Doe #2’s home. The victims did not know Shaw. The defendant approached the home and woke the victims from outside the bedroom window. Shaw threatened the victims that he had a firearm and would “blow their heads off” if they tried to call for help or failed to follow his instructions. The defendant ordered the terrified girls to take off their clothes and stand by the window, fondled their breasts, digitally penetrated the victims, and ejaculated. As the defendant fled the scene, he warned the victims not to call the police. The two victims followed his instructions out of fear. They later dialed 9-1-1 at approximately 4:00 a.m. after hearing noises outside and fearing that the defendant had come back.
Shaw was not located, but responding officers collected semen from the scene and entered it into a DNA database. In 2006, Shaw was linked to the crime after his DNA received a cold hit from a 2003 Oregon case with similar circumstances. The defendant was convicted of four felonies in Oregon for residential burglary, coercion, and attempted sexual abuse in 2003. He was later brought back to Orange County.
At the sentencing today, one of the victims addressed the court and explained that after the sexual assault she spent the next six years fearful everyday that Shaw was going to come back for her again and never be caught. She also expressed that she was glad he was going to spend the rest of his life in prison so she could move on with her own.
Deputy District Attorney Robert Mestman of the Sexual Assault Unit prosecuted this case.
