MAN TO BE ARRAIGNED FOR ATTACKING
AND SEXUALLY ASSAULTING WOMAN ON DRIVEWAY AS SHE GOT OUT OF HER CAR
NEWPORT BEACH – A certified nurse’s assistant has been charged with attacking a woman and trying to rape her outside of her Costa Mesa home. Byron Mauricio Izaguirre, 25, Costa Mesa, is charged with assault with the intent to commit rape, two counts of sexual penetration by a foreign object, and resisting and obstructing an officer. If convicted, he faces a maximum of 22 years in prison. Izaguirre is being held on $1 million bail and is scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow, March 8, 2007 at 8:30 a.m. in Department H-2, Harbor Justice Center, Newport Beach.
On February 21, 2007 at approximately 1:00 a.m., Jane Doe was returning to a home in Costa Mesa where she was house-sitting after a night out with her friends. As she got out of her car in the driveway and went to enter the house through the garage, Izaguirre is accused of grabbing her from behind and attacking her. He is accused of fighting with her as she struggled to get away, and forcing his hands under her clothing and digitally penetrating her. The victim ran to the street, but Izaguirre is accused of catching her and sexually assaulting her again. When neighbors came out of their homes after hearing the victim screaming, Izaguirre is accused of fleeing and hiding in nearby bushes. Officers arrived and he is accused of resisting arrest and not complying with the officer’s instructions.
Anyone with additional information or who believes they have been a victim is encouraged to call Supervising District Attorney Investigator Craig Kelsey at (714) 347-8794.
Senior Deputy District Attorney Mike Fell of the Sexual Assault Unit is prosecuting this case.
