Media Advisory – OC GRIP hosts Ocean Institute Tall Ships Sail Event in Dana Point

WHO: 175 local elementary school students

WHAT: OC GRIP / Ocean Institute Tall Ships Sail Event

WHEN: Thursday, September 6, 2018.  9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. (approximately)

WHERE: Ocean Institute, 24200 Dana Point Harbor Dr., Dana Point

In conjunction with the upcoming Tall Ships Festival, Ocean Institute and OC GRIP will host 175 students from Title 1 Schools in North Orange County for an exciting day at Dana Point Harbor. Students, who have earned the opportunity to attend this special event by achieving goals of improving their attendance, academic performance, and/or behavior, will gather at the Ocean Institute and board one of seven historic tall ships for a sailing adventure featuring historical reenactments, including cannon battles.

OC GRIP is a law enforcement partnership that identifies at-risk youth and aims to increase school attendance and decrease gang activity. The program provides mentorship from law enforcement and community partners and offers incentives for positive behavior, perfect attendance, and staying out of gangs. The Orange County District Attorney’s Office (OCDA) has OC GRIP and GRIP II committees and partnerships with law enforcement agencies, including police departments in the cities of Anaheim, Buena Park, Costa Mesa, Fullerton, Garden Grove, Orange, Placentia, and Santa Ana, as well as the Santa Ana Unified School District Police, Orange County Sheriff’s Department, Orange County Probation Department, and OCDA’s Bureau of Investigation.

Schools participating in this  event are: Gauer Elementary and Price Elementary in Anaheim, Gilbert Elementary and Whitaker Elementary in Buena Park, Maple Elementary, Woodcrest Elementary, and Valencia Park Elementary in Fullerton.  The event is made possible by through the corroborative efforts of Ocean Institute and OC GRIP.

OC GRIP invites the media to be at the Ocean Institute at 9:00 a.m. Credentialed members of the press interested in attending are required to make advance arrangements with  OCDA Spokesperson Michelle Van Der Linden via email at Michelle.VanDerLinden@da.ocgov.com by 4:00 PM on Wednesday. Credentialed media will also be required to complete a “Risk Waiver”, which will be available at the event.
