MOTHER CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTED
MURDER FOR LEAVING NEWBORN BABY IN
LAGUNA NIGUEL APARTMENT DUMPSTER

NEWPORT BEACH – A mother will be arraigned today for attempting to kill her new baby girl by leaving her in an apartment complex dumpster. Shawn Kelli Sepulveda, 38, Laguna Niguel, is charged with one felony count of attempted murder and one felony count of child abuse.  She faces a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted. Sepulveda is being held on $1 million bail and is expected to be arraigned today in Department H-1 at the Harbor Justice Center in Newport Beach. The time is to be determined.

On Aug. 16, 2008, Sepulveda is accused of putting her new baby girl, Jane Doe, in a dumpster of the Laguna Niguel apartment complex where she lived. Jane Doe was only a few hours old. She is accused of leaving the baby to die and failing to care for her baby’s health and well being. A resident of the complex found the naked baby and alerted apartment staff. The staff removed Jane Doe from the dumpster and called 9-1-1. Jane Doe is recovering in the hospital and is expected to be taken into protective custody by the Orange County Social Services Agency.

Senior Deputy District Attorney Jeff Winter of the Family Protection Unit is prosecuting this case.
