MOTHER TO BE ARRAIGNED FOR ATTEMPTING TO MURDER HER TWO SMALL CHILDREN BY STABBING THEM WHILE THEY WERE SLEEPING
WESTMINSTER – A mother will be arraigned this afternoon for attempting to murder her two small children by stabbing them while they were sleeping. Thuy Thi Le, 38, Westminster, is charged with two felony counts of attempted murder with premeditation and deliberation and two felony counts of child abuse likely to produce great bodily harm and death. Le was also charged with sentencing enhancement allegations for the personal used a deadly weapon (knife), and for personally inflicting great bodily injury on Child Doe#1, and personally inflicting great bodily injury on Child Doe#2 who was under the age of five.
If convicted, Le faces a maximum sentence of two life terms plus 11 years in state prison. The People will be requesting $1 million bail at the defendant’s arraignment scheduled for today, Friday, Sept. 18, 2009, at 1:30 p.m. in Department W-14 or W-15, West Justice Center, Westminster.
On Sept. 16, 2009, at about 6:30 a.m., Le was spending the night at a family member’s house with her children, ages 5 and 3. Her boyfriend, who is the father of the children, was at work. Le and her two children were sleeping together on a mattress in the family room. Le is accused going into the kitchen, picking up a knife from the sink, walking back over to the children, stabbing each of them in the chest, and then stabbing herself. She is accused of calling 9-1-1 to report what she had done.
Deputy District Attorney Dawn Vargas of the Family Protection Unit is prosecuting this case.
