Santa Ana – A “John Doe” arrest warrant and criminal charges have been filed for a man possessing a unique DNA profile. This is the first time such an arrest warrant has been issued in Orange County and only the second time for a county in California. The name of defendant “John Doe” is not known, but his DNA has been linked to “take over robberies” at two banks in Orange County.
Doe has been charged with 11 felony counts of robbery and one felony count of attempted robbery along with an enhancement for criminal street gang activity. If convicted of all charges, Doe faces up to 66 years and 4 months in state prison.
Between May 2000 and October 2003, a series of 14 take over bank robberies were committed in Orange County. The Orange County Sheriff’s Crime Lab tested evidence from the scenes of these robberies. The Crime Lab matched the DNA profiles of several people connected to a criminal street gang. John Doe’s DNA profile was collected from the May 17, 2002, robbery at the Wells Fargo Bank, 12952 Harbor Boulevard in Garden Grove and the December 14, 2001, robbery at the Wells Fargo Bank, 32222 Camino Capistrano in San Juan Capistrano.
The series of robberies were originally connected by the investigative work of Huntington Beach Police Detective Mike Nakama and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department Crime Lab. Senior Deputy District Attorney Jeff Levy in the Gangs unit has been assigned to prosecute the case.
Anyone with information surrounding this case is encouraged to call Detective Mike Nakama at 714-536-5951.
