ORANGE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL COACH SENT TO JAIL FOR HAVING SEX WITH 16-YEAR-OLD FEMALE PLAYER ON TEAM
Santa Ana – A former high school girl’s basketball coach was sentenced to 90 days in jail after pleading guilty to one count of felony oral copulation of a minor today. In addition, the defendant will be placed on three years of formal probation, sexual offender counseling, not participate in activities involving minors, and register as a sex offender.
Garret Yoshina, who was 30 at the time of the crime, began seducing then 16-year-old Jane Doe, through emails. Yoshina was working at El Dorado High School in Placentia as the girl’s basketball coach and boy’s baseball coach at the time of the incident. The defendant met his victim who was a player on the team at school. The unlawful sexual acts between the two occurred on multiple occasions at the defendant’s home after school from 6/1/2000 to 12/31/2000.
“I admire Jane Doe for coming forward five years later and revealing embarrassing details about her life. She did so because she did not want other girls to be victimized by the defendant and go through what she did. The defendant was twice her age should have know better. He violated a trust by having sex with a girl he was in charge of and he knew he should not be,” said Deputy District Attorney Heidi Garrel. Deputy District Attorney Heidi Garrel of the Sexual Assaults Unit prosecuted the case.
