REGISTERED SEX OFFENDER CHARGED WITH DEATH OF 29-YEAR-OLD WOMAN IN THE COURSE OF BRUTAL RAPE, SODOMY, AND ORAL COPULATION IN MOTEL ROOM

SANTA ANA – A registered sex offender has been charged with causing the death of a 29-year-old woman in the course of brutally sexually assaulting her in a Stanton motel room. Charles Patrick Drew, 62, transient, is charged with one felony count of special circumstances murder in the commission of rape, sodomy, and oral copulation. The defendant has two prior strike convictions from 1995 for forcible rape and assault with a deadly weapon. If convicted, the defendant faces a minimum sentence of life in state prison without the possibility of parole. The special circumstances in this case also make Drew eligible for the death penalty. The defendant is being held without bail and is expected to be arraigned today, Wednesday, March 21, 2012, in Department C-55, Central Justice Center, Santa Ana. The time is to be determined.

At the time of the crime, Drew is accused of staying in a rented motel room at Motel 6 in Stanton with 29-year-old Jane Doe.

Sometime between March 17 and March 18, 2012, Drew is accused of brutally sexually assaulting the victim including rape, sodomy, and oral copulation. The victim died in the course of the sexual assault. Drew is accused of then attempting to clean the scene.

On March 19, 2012, Drew is accused of walking outside of his motel room and asking someone to call 911 because Jane Doe was unresponsive.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene and investigated this case. The investigation is ongoing.

Senior Deputy District Attorney Ebrahim Baytieh of the Homicide Unit is prosecuting this case.
