Remarks by District Attorney Tony Rackauckas
Press Conference: Ali Achekzai Capture
January 28, 2010
Thank you all for coming. To my right are Lieutenant Rick O’Hanlon and Sergeant Dave Dolan from the San Diego Police Department and Tustin Police Chief Scott Jordan.
To my left are FBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge Douglas Price and Sheriff Sandra Hutchens.
I am pleased to announce the recent capture of a defendant featured on the Orange County District Attorney’s website as one of our “Ten Most Wanted.”
I would like to commend the investigation led by the Tustin Police Department with great assistance from the –
*United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement
*United States Marshall’s Service
*Toronto Police Services Fugitive Squad
*Orange County Sheriff’s Department
*San Diego Police Department
*San Diego District Attorney’s Office
*Salzburg Criminal Investigative Division and
*Austrian Federal Police
All of whom helped bring this suspected international serial rapist to justice, all the way from Salzburg, Austria.
We plan on extraditing Ali Achekzai to Orange County to face charges for violently raping and sexually assaulting three different women in two different counties.
Unfortunately for a young woman in Austria, he was charged for her rape but later released.
Fortunately for the three victims in Southern California and other potential victims all over the globe, that arrest and the taking of his DNA may well result in this defendant’s incarceration for the rest of his life.
Ali Achekzai is a poster boy for the One Strike Law that we are prosecuting him under and the Sexually Violent Predator Law which might be used decades from now to keep him from even returning to free society.
