The Orange County District Attorneys Office and the Brea Police Department announced today that criminal charges were filed against Grady Machnick, a sergeant in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, and Deborah Machnick, an elementary school principal in the Walnut Valley Unified School District.
They are each charged with one misdemeanor count of Penal Code section 273a(b)–Child Abuse/Endangerment–in connection with an investigation conducted by the Brea Police Department.
The charges are misdemeanors that carry a maximum sentence of six months in the county jail and a fine of up to $1,000.00. If probation is granted, additional mandatory minimum requirements include four years of probation, successful completion of a year long child abuser’s treatment program, and the issuance of criminal court protective orders.
The victim’s name is not being released because the victim is a minor.
In accordance with standard procedure in this type of case, letters have been issued ordering the two named defendants to appear on October 1, 2001 in the Orange County Superior Court, North Justice Center, Fullerton, for their arraignment.
