SIX ORANGE COUNTY JAIL INMATES CHARGED WITH MURDER FOR BEATING FELLOW INMATE TO DEATH
SANTA ANA – Charges were field today against six male inmates at the Theo Lacy Facility in Orange for beating and killing him. Garrett Eugene Aguilar, 23, Stephen Paul Carlstrom, 38, Michael Stewart Garten, 21, Eric Charles Miller, 21, Jared Louis Petrovich, 22, and Christopher Teague, 30, were charged with one count of murder in the death of John Chamberlain. If convicted, they each face 25 years to life in prison. They are scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday, November 21, 2006 at the Central Justice Center, Santa Ana.
On October 5, 2006, the six defendants are accused of targeting Chamberlain because they believed him to be a child molester. Chamberlain was in custody on possession of child pornography charges. The six men beat him repeatedly inside a cell in the jail facility. Chamberlain was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Senior Deputy District Attorney Ebrahim Baytieh of the Homicide Unit will prosecute this case.
As for criminal misconduct on behalf of law enforcement personnel, Senior Deputy District Attorney Mike Murray will be reviewing the case. He will not be available for comment until the investigation is completed.
