Case # 12ZF0128
Date: March 29, 2017
STATEMENT
SANTA ANA, Calif. – Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas has released the following statement:
“The Orange County District Attorney’s Office (OCDA) wholeheartedly supports Attorney General Becerra’s decision to seek the death penalty in the case against Scott Dekraai, who senselessly murdered eight people and wounded another in Seal Beach in 2011. Dekraai is a perfect example of why the death penalty exists and why I fought so hard to pass Proposition 66 to mend the death penalty. If the perpetrator of a mass slaughter of innocent people doesn’t deserve the death penalty, it’s hard to imagine a criminal who would.
The OCDA secured a guilty plea on May 2, 2014, and now the People of Orange County will have the opportunity to decide Dekraai’s fate. Our hearts continue to stand in solidarity with the victims and their families: Michelle Fournier, Christy Wilson, Randy Fannin, Lucia Kondas, Victoria Buzzo, Laura Webb Elody, Michele Fast, David Caouette, and Hattie Stretz.”
